Michikamats Rare Earth Project
Underexplored ring complex in emerging Labrador district. Peak grades up to 0.91% TREO+Y₂O₃. Available for option.
Overview
The Michikamats project is an underexplored rare earth target in central Labrador, covering a well-defined circular magnetic anomaly associated with a Mesoproterozoic syenite-granite ring complex. The project was staked in 2010 following release of GSC high-resolution aeromagnetic data that revealed distinctive ring structures – the same survey methodology that identified the nearby Misery Lake complex, now an active REE exploration target.
Despite encouraging initial results, the property has seen no exploration work since 2010.
2010 Reconnaissance Results
Limited sampling (127 grab samples along two traverse lines) returned:
- Up to 0.91% TREO+Y₂O₃ from grab samples, with multiple samples exceeding 0.5% TREO
- Best results concentrated in the center of the ring structure
- Strong correlation between REE enrichment and elevated radioactivity (up to 1,800 cps)
- Light REE-enriched mineralization associated with syenite and altered granite
Note: Historical samples were not assayed for scandium. Given the alkaline syenite-granite host rocks – a geological setting commonly associated with scandium enrichment – this represents an untested exploration vector.
District Context
Michikamats sits within an emerging REE belt along the Québec-Labrador border that includes:
- Strange Lake – One of the largest undeveloped REE deposits globally, enriched in valuable heavy REE
- Ytterby 2 & 3 – Discoveries within the Mistastin batholith with grab samples up to 13% TREO
- Two Tom – 40.6 Mt at 1.18% TREO resource (Letitia Lake area)
- Foxtrot/Deep Fox – 15.1 Mt indicated + 6.3 Mt inferred resource at Port Hope Simpson
Recent government-funded U-Pb geochronology dates the Michikamats syenite at 1459 Ma, confirming it as part of a significant Mesoproterozoic magmatic event associated with the nearby Michikamau anorthosite intrusion.
Exploration Upside
The 2010 work program was cursory reconnaissance only. The project offers significant upside:
- Defined target: Circular magnetic anomaly with coincident radiometric highs
- Proven exploration model: Geophysical signatures consistent with economic REE mineralization elsewhere in the district
- Scandium potential: Untested in historical work
- Underexplored district: Regional GSC aeromagnetic data continue to reveal additional ring complex features
Proposed Work Program
Phase 1:
- Airborne radiometric survey to define anomalous zones
- Systematic prospecting and rock sampling (including scandium assays)
- Geological mapping of ring complex units
Phase 2:
- Diamond drilling of priority targets
The Opportunity
Michikamats offers a cost-effective entry into a district with demonstrated REE potential. The combination of encouraging historical results, a well-defined geophysical target, and minimal prior work creates an opportunity to generate meaningful news flow with a modest exploration budget.
